While I sat in the comfy little sports car, my arms wrapped around my middle, I tried to keep a grip on reality as the rest of Demitri’s memory played out. It was all I could do to stay, when I wanted to rip myself out of his mind and take myself as far away from the Master as possible. But there was Philo to consider, and the grasping fingers of Demitri’s terrible memory still wrapped around my own mind, my own soul, as surely as they were around his.

I believe I am prepared for anything. A child. A pregnant mother. A warrior brought to his knees. Any of these and more would please the Master. Any of these could be seen as a “gift” in his twisted mind. I stare at the Master’s face—forcing myself to see his too-wide eyes glowing red in the darkness, the black horns that curled from his misshapen forehead, his sharp and jagged cheekbones framing the flat, almost pig-like nose, the wide, thick red lips and the double rows of fangs protruding over them. A horror. But I couldn’t keep my gaze from sliding to his powerful naked chest, where a familiar face with madness in her eyes stared up at me.

“Hello, Papa.”

I stumble back, feeling as though I have just been kicked in the gut. My knees give out and I fall onto them, barely aware of the pain that ricochets through my bones. I can’t take my eyes off her. I want to look away, so desperately, but my gaze is fixed.

She is naked, her body covered in the Master’s bites. Bites that never healed, but fester. The impossible woman slides out of the Master’s embrace and slowly crawls toward me, her grin wide, her gaze mad. She is no innocent. Not anymore. And she is no human.

Though she is older than when I last saw her, I see her mother in the color of her hair, in the fairness of her skin.

I would know my daughter anywhere.
